Class 6: Your Essence is in your Heart

Essence of the Self Kriya

When you are weighed down by the scars and disappointments of life, it is difficult to sense the broader reality of which you are a part. This pain creates blocks to the inflow of cosmic energy and you become less sensitive to your own possibilities. This set of exercises guides the prana [1] through your body to the heart chakra [2], opening the heart so you can give and receive love without fear, anger, or resentment, and experience compassion.

In this state of compassion you can release the pain of former relationships, energize current relationships on a higher level, and begin to express your divine essence.

The exercises in this kriya are for the release of tension, strengthening the digestion, and opening the lungs. If you are new to Kundalini Yoga, you may want to rest after each exercise unless otherwise noted.

Meditation into Being

This mantra connects the finite and Infinite identities. The first "I Am" emphasizes the "I" and is the personal and finite sense of self. The second "I Am" emphasizes slightly the "Am" and is the impersonal and transcendent sense of the Self.

All real mantras blend this polarity of the Infinite and finite in their internal structure and design. If you only say the first "I Am", the mind will automatically try to answer, "I am what?" This sends the mind on a search through all the categories and roles that hold the finite identities.

If you immediately say the second part of the mantra, "I Am," the thought becomes "I Am what I Am." To be what you are is the essence of truth and will lead you to the nature of Reality.

The hand and the breath move in rhythm and strengthen your ability to maintain a sense of self as your awareness expands.
